Narrative Mini-Lesson:

  • (5-7 min.) Modeling: Talk Aloud as you quick write a moment from your list.
  • Ask students to put the date in their notebooks and do exactly what you’ve just shown them. Set timer for 10 minutes.
  • Have students pair and share quick writes.
  1. Read __ model place narrative.
  • Annotate and talk aloud as you read, noting how writer starts, the separate stories he/she tells, the So What? (theme) he/she shares.
  1. Independent Writing Time—continue quick write, write about another moment.
  • Clarify for students that their final place narrative will include three (3) moments and be two (2) pages. At this point, they should be finalizing topic and selecting which three moments they’ll include.
  • Teacher circulates, conferring, tracking on clipboard where each student is in process.
